This part of Prague is called the New World (Nový svět) – and it is the most quiet part of Hradčany, to which it was affiliated in 1360, by the decision of Charles IV. The city fortifications that protected this part of the city also date from that time. At that time, people serving at Prague Castle lived here. The New World was not the home of the rich even in later times. That is why its houses often have the word “golden” in their name – probably to make people feel richer (golden tree, golden bush, golden sun, golden star or perhaps a golden plow).
At the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, there were still poor people living here, suffered by unemployment and hunger. The turning point came around the 1960s. The New World has become a truly valued location where many artists have found a home. (In the last few years, the popular summer stage of the high quality theater Ungelt has also been here in the summer. Its principal Milan Hein lives in the New World too, of course.)
